Book review: Amusing Ourselves to Death

A good eye-opener, and although it was written in 1985 it feels as it was written today. In fact, it's more important today than then when it was written. I wonder what he would have to say regarding the trends of today with social networks like Tiktok, Twitter, Facebook, youtube...

I have always believed that graphics was a good medium for transferring knowledge, and maybe it is for somethings, but it's very different from typography. The former is specific and concrete, you are pointing at a particular thing or object, it lacks what the latter have, abstraction, typography is well suited for abstraction.

TV is a medium for entertainment and it's absolutely fine for that purpose. It's when we get our news, commercials, political parties agenda and ideas that we see these things only as the medium allows it, a collection of disconnected clips that is very far from reality. It's meant to be seen, experienced and enjoyed but doesn't hold any exposition.

What did you benefit from the news you read last week? Wow did it change what you will do today? The Politician is acting the way the viewers are expecting hi to "act". It's a show business.

The main takeaway, I believe, if you are doing these things for entertainment and you are aware of it, then good for you. But if you are not aware that the news is not relevant to you or that it's making you biased, that politics is a show business... then you are doing your self harm.

Good book, I recommend reading it.
